What is Total Quality Management?
Total Quality Division - termed as TQM in short, means to achieve a level of competence in an organisation striving towards business excellence. TQM is a practice of a management philosophy which is focussed on :
- Achievement of business success
- Use of a system which is based on scientific methods
- Participation of all its people
The CII-EXIM Model for Business Excellence is an accepted criteria for measuring the integration of TQM as a business strategy. This model is based on the European Model for Total Quality, and used to administer the CII-EXIM Award for Business Excellence.
In brief, a TQM practicing company must be a provider of :
- World class products to satisfy its customers and users, which are
- Competitive in price, quality and delivery performance
- A Work culture, which, makes it the most loved organisation amongst its people
- A high Share-holder value
- New products faster and cheaper than competitor to the society which improve the standard of living of people
TQM is a journey. It is not a milestone. However there are assessment tools which can be deployed effectively during various stages of evolution to do course correction and pursue the process. In Japan there is the prestigious Deming Prize and its criteria has been used to strengthen the Japanese Industry to a great extent. Similarly in USA there is the National Malcolm Baldrige Award, and in Europe the European Award for Quality.
In CII, while we started our Quality journey by creating an interest in ISO9000 and in 1992, an Award for Business Excellence based on the European Model for Business Excellence was adopted.
